  1. Why Messy SID?

  3. Well, Messydos,( whilst a brilliant piece of programming which lets you
  4. read and write to IBM discs in an Amiga drive), is damn hard to actually
  5. get off the original Fish disc, and on to your own in working order.
  6. I know. I tried. Hands up everyone else who failed?
  7. Turns out there are only three things you need to make it work.
  8. 1: A suitable mountlist in the DEVS folder. (Read the one on this disc)
  9. 2: Messy_filesystem
  10. 3: Messydisc.device
  11. They are all here, ready for your own use.

  13. SID is an indispensible utility for mucking around with Amiga discs.

  16. Putting the two together was a masterly idea, and Ferragamo did just that
  17. earlier this year (1991).

  20. Why Messy SID II then?
  21.  
  22. Simple. Ferragamo spent so much time being nice to people, with loads of
  23. startup sequences, doc files, instructions etc, that many of the little
  24. utilities which make SID so useful were missed off, and thus the thing
  25. was that much less use than it might have been.

  27. I have set this disc up so that you get the full shilling out of SID,
  28. and still have access to MSDOS drives with Messydos.

  30. BUT!!!!

  32. Confession time- I had to leave off one or two doc files,most of the
  33. icon files and some other little bits and pieces.
  34. The important ones are all in the DOCS folder, which is where you should
  35. look for the addresses of the shareware authors whose work is enclosed.
  36. The messydos files are archived in the docs folder as src.lzh, as
  37. prepared by Ferragamo.

  39. On that subject- Messysid (the original) was designed as a Workbench disc,
  40. and the docs forbade anyone messing around with the disc.
  41. I have not. This disc houses different utilities for use by SID,and if,
  42. as I suspect, that still will upset someone- I apologise.
  43. This 'version' is primarily a CLI based enviroment for speed.
  44. Loadwb is still in the C folder, but crippled because there are no .info
  45. files around for it to display.
  46. You pays your money, you takes your choice...

  48. Also, the bulk of the utilities on the disc were assembled for the
  49. Workstation disc, in case they looked familiar. If that puts out anyone's
  50. nose, sorry to you too!

  52. Otherwise, if you just want to USE the stuff - its all here for you.
  53. Easy enough for the (near) beginner. Plenty of scope for the experts.

  56. Very quick instructions - after selecting which drive to use for MSDOS
  57. by the startup-selector, you can read or write to MSDOS discs in that
  58. drive by refering to it as MS0: or MS1: for drives 0 or 1 respectively.
  59. You can also read and write Amiga discs in the same drive by calling
  60. them DF0: or DF1: as normal in the SID selector boxes.
  61. The other functions assigned to the SID buttons should all work as you
  62. would expect. Most of the programs they call have been put into the C
  63. directory.
